Good health is invaluable – so the government must stop charging us VAT on fitness

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” said Benjamin Franklin – and while he may have been talking about fire safety, the proverb is invariably used in the context of preventative medicine. 

Exercise is a natural example of Franklin’s wise words – indeed, it’s a link that Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, made some 2,500 years ago, when he said “food and exercise work together to produce health”. (He also believed that female ‘hysteria’ was caused by a wandering uterus, but I guess no one can get everything right.)
