Health Minister survives no-confidence motion at parliament

She has been serving as the Health Minister for two years. Her predecessor Guntis Belēvičs stepped down after it emerged he had received special treatment for a minor skin complaint.

Čakša has come under criticism for the way the health reform is being handled, as well as ongoing problems with the “e-health” online system, and other things.

The opposition proposal to call Čakša to step down was supported by 33 MPs; 49 were ‘against’; while a further two ‘abstained’.

Under Čakša, the healthcare system is undergoing reforms aiming to increase wages for medical professionals, as well as reduce wait times for state-sponsored procedures.

To this end, Latvia’s healthcare sector received a funding boost of about €200 million last year, with the total sector budget surpassing €1 billion.
