Healthy Living: Do You Believe Your Child’s BMI Report Card

Dealing with obesity as a child can be tough, but it can be even tougher when parents are refusing to accept the health facts.

According to the CDC, one-in-five kids between the ages of 6 and 19 are overweight in the U.S.

When told that their child is overweight, parents tend to have a hard time coping with the information and changing their child’s diet and exercise plans.

The percentage of kids affected by obesity has more than tripled since the 1970’s. Only 50 percent of parents are changing their child’s diet when they receive their Body Mass Index results.

A normal BMI for a child is between the fifth and 85th percentile. If a child’s BMI is over 85 percent, they are recommended to get at least 60 minutes of physical activity as well as change their caloric intake.

A great way to help keep your child healthy is to change the packed snacks that you send with them. Fruits and vegetables are recommended, and parents are advised to limit the amount of sugary snacks consumed.

How well kids sleep can also affect their weight. They are encouraged to get 12 hours of sleep a night in order to stay fit and healthy.
